When I entered Pace Law School, I didn't realize at first how amazingly fortunate I was to have been assigned Vanessa Merton as my counselor. However, I soon saw what a career-defining privilege that was; particularly when I participated in her Immigration Clinic. Her passion, knowledge, wisdom, and dedication to help disadvantaged immigrants were an inspiration to me. After graduating, I went on to practice immigration law in the non-profit sector - which I still do.

Professor Merton was famous for working tirelessly at night, and I remember wondering how she could do it. That is until one day I walked into her office and saw huge amounts of chocolate and caffeinated soda!

Vanessa, your retirement is well-deserved. You leave an enormous legacy, and I will remember you with affection and respect.
