Prof. Merton taught me everything that I would ever need to succeed as a lawyer and to always strive for the best outcome for the client. She would say, “All you can do is the best you can do.” She taught us to work hard for the client, to show the client that we tried all possible options and that we did not give up. She showed us how to provide ethical, conscientious, and compassionate representation. She supervised me during my first master calendar hearing in immigration court and knowing that she was present, behind me, supporting me, is what allowed me to do what I was supposed to do. Prof. Merton gave me the idea to apply for a fellowship and her recommendation letter was outstanding. That is what Prof. Merton does for all of her students - she goes above and beyond. Even after my class graduated in 2015, she kept in touch with us and we were fortunate and happy to have gatherings with her, even with her busy schedule. Prof. Merton sent me my first children’s book (about immigration, of course) as a new mom in 2021. Thank you so much, Prof. Merton and congratulations!!!
