I took Vanessa’s clinic in 1991. We were suing the NYS Department of Corrections for mistreatment of our institutionalized client with AIDS. I’ll never forget his name. That case. And Vanessa showing us all over and over, in big moments and in small, how to stand tall and fight hard no matter the headwinds. And how to find pleasure in that fight whatever the outcome. I’ve been teaching in a similar clinic for the last 24 years working hard to spread these lessons (and so many others) to my students. I owe every minute of my career to Vanessa. And if I’ve helped my students and clients in any way, they owe her as well. I am forever grateful for my luck in finding a place under her wing.
