Vanessa Merton is a brilliant person, a gifted and beloved teacher, passionate in her causes which are many and indefatigable in advocating for her plans and ideals.

We often substantially disagreed on issues and school policies and problems, yet I always felt we were friends. I think the secret was not that I would come to agree with her view, and certainly not that she would change her mind and come around to my view.

I think it was that we both had a somewhat similar sense of humor and could laugh at and with each other.

Vanessa has been dealt an unfair, undeserved hand with a terrible disease.

I only wish I could have spoken these words to her when she was well.
