Dear Professor Merton,

I am so grateful that I was lucky enough to have crossed paths with you. Your belief in me propelled me into spaces I thought I didn't belong in, and for that, I'll always be thankful. You always reminded me that “all you can do is your best.” And I still live by that.

After I graduated, you suggested I call you Vanessa, but it never quite clicked. To me, you'll always be Professor Merton. I don't see myself as your equal just yet, but I'm still striving to become the kind of advocate you've been for your clients and the professor you've been to your students. You are hard to replace. The Pace community, particularly the Immigration Justice Clinic, won’t be the same without you there. You will truly be missed.
